When girls lead...

Many people who join the Peace Corps think they will change the world and find out that the world is there to change them even more. Staying open to letting the world change us even as we try to do good, is a powerful and universally important message.  In general, I think we all had or have a vision for her/his life that doesn't exactly pan out. Even if we come close to the mark of who we thought we'd be, life throws us curve balls. It felt like the girls and women I worked with understood this already.

Pack Aspiration

I tear open the letter that I had been anxiously awaiting for. “Welcome the Peace Corps; as you prepare for your service commitment, we ask that you pack no more than two bags for the twenty-seven month volunteer assignment.” I quickly skimmed the letter hoping there would be guidance on how to pack all of my hopes and dreams into just two bags, as well. The excitement and adrenaline rushes through me as well as the ‘oh no, this is about to get real feeling” that caused me jolt of worry; Can I do this?  Am I good enough? Will I be able to learn another language? Will I be able to contribute?  What the heck did I know?  What could I teach? What do I know at 24 years old?  Will my future community want a refund or want to return me because I know absolutely nothing! Will I ever be the same?

Let the Journey Begin!

About 20 years ago, I wrote every day for over 2 years. I wrote on damp and dusty old notebooks using a crappy pencil. I wrote when I was happy, I wrote when I was confused, I wrote when I was sad, I wrote when I was angry, and I wrote when I was excited. I wrote when I had nothing to write about and when I was homesick.
